Summer of Play
Oh my gosh! I had the most amazing summer off. My soul craved play. I heeded the call.
I scrapped my ambitious goals for the summer. In it’s place, I dreamt up my very own “Summer of Play”
What made the list? Adventures that made me want to giggle with excitement.
My Creative Muse
Ambitious as my original goals were, something was off with my creative energy.
Cue my Creative Muse, “Little Heather”.
She is an unstoppable force of expressive mark making. She sees the magic in the world, and pushes me to continue to stay curious, observant, and trust. She craves PLAY.
And she was tugging on me to SLOW down and play.
What My Summer of Play Looked Like
Watching sea turtles nest under the moonlight - pure magic!!
Finding a new community of artists and mentorship at The Arts Students League - a gift from above!
Secret escapade in the mountains to watch rare synchronous fireflies and glowworms - MORE MAGIC!!!
Planting an abundance of flowers in my garden.
Hiking in the mountains amongst fields of wildflowers
Travel to NYC and D.C. to visit High Art Museums, including Joan Mitchell’s Retrospective Exhibit
Meeting up with my art coach & viewing Frankenthatler’s work together- one of my 2022 goals!!!
Weekend girls trip with my BF - the absolute best!
Celebrating turning 40 with my friends and family
Creating work just for me - - exploring through experimentation
Making space to be alone with myself
I experienced new heights of joy, a deep sense of belonging, support, and community. And as a result a new level of healing.
What’s Next?
I’m coming back…SLOWLY. To enjoy every step of the creative process.
For now, my creative muse, Little Heather is demanding more play and less production mode.
For now me and Little Heather are creating work for the pure sake of experimentation. With the knowing that something special will eventually emerge without the need to “push”.
Currently I’m working on LARGE canvases in my studio. I’m allowing all the magic, child-like wonder, and inspiration from my summer of play to expressively transfer from my hand to the canvas.
I’m excited to see where the unknown leads me.
To more child-like play and laughter,
